Turning Angel

As two of the most prominent citizens of Natchez, Drew and Penn sit on the school board of their alma mater, St. Stephen's Prep. When the nude body of a young female student is found near the Mississippi River, the entire community is shocked - but no one more than Penn, who discovers that his best friend was entangled in a passionate relationship with the girl and may be accused of her murder.

On the surface, Kate Townsend seems the most unlikely murder victim imaginable. A star student and athlete, she'd been accepted to Harvard and carried the hope and pride of the town on her shoulders. But like her school and her town, Kate also had a secret life - one about which her adult lover knew little.

When Drew begs Penn to defend him, Penn allows his sense of obligation to override his instinct and agrees. Yet before he can begin, both men are drawn into a dangerous web of blackmail and violence. Penn finds himself doubting his friend's motives and searching for a path out of harm's way.

More dangerous yet is Shad Johnson, the black district attorney whose dream is to send a rich white man to death row in Mississippi. At Shad's order, Drew is jailed, the police cease hunting Kate's killer, and Penn realizes that only by finding Kate's murderer himself can he save his friend's life.

With his daughter's babysitter as his guide, Penn penetrates the secret world of St. Stephen's, a place that parents never see, where reality veers so radically from appearance that Penn risks losing his own moral compass. St. Stephen's is a dark mirror of the adult world, one populated by steroid-crazed jocks, girls desperate for attention, and jaded teens flirting with nihilism. And hidden among them all is one true psychopath.

Set in Natchez, MS., Penn Cage, a former Houston prosecutor, turned writer, has returned to his boyhood home in the previous book of the series. Written by Greg Iles, the novel gives us some very good, solid writing which is full of twists and turns. The book hinges upon Penn's old friend who has had an adult/young high school girl relationship. The girl winds up murdered, which becomes the crux of the story. The book also brings us into the racial tensions which are present in this small town; as well as fairly open drug problems among some of the characters.Mr. Iles also touches upon Penn's struggles with his own personal relationships, as well as his future plans. Penn, himself, "walks the fence" regarding a certain young lady.Well-developed characters from the first book are present once more. The characters are solid and have definitive personalities which jump out at the reader, helping make the plot more plausible. There are a number of reviewers who have panned the book; which I can't understand. One may not like the type of sordid relationships, drug use, or violence present. But, this is nothing different than our everyday real world. The twists and solid writing, to many, make this a winner. I've read this book out of sequence. No problem. You can easily read this as a stand-alone novel.

It was only through a daily deal on Amazon that I was introduced to Greg Iles and am I glad I clicked the buy now button. That book was The Quiet Game that introduced me to Penn Cage, Iles' protagonist. That book was outstanding as well, but Turning Angel is even better! The death of a beautiful high school senior who seemingly had everything going for her sets off a chain of events that will grab and engage you until the last page is turned. Taking place in Natchez MS, Iles' characters say profound things the rest of us only wish we could think to say. This guy is really an accomplished writer. I've got my library stocked already with 4 more of his books!

Penn Cage is the ultimate good guy who always saves the day. He is smart, human, unflappable and moral. He has wonderful parents, the kind everyone should have and he is a great single parent to his daughter. Annie. He wants Annie to have a mother figure in her life but finding the right benefit n his hometown of Natchez, Mississippi is s lean task.He cares about Natchez just as he cares about his family and his friends; he is loyal to the point of constantly being put in harm’s way. He is brave in the face of certain destruction nut he is never deterredFrom certain action. The storyline’s interaction with teenagers piques interest and takes the reader into a world of mature youngsters who flirt with actions far beyond their years.I can’t wait to get into the third Penn Cage book; the first two were thrilling and I want more!

I loved Greg Iles' first Penn Cage book and I am not squeamish about sex in novels, but I think it's a good thing this book was published in 2004 because I think it would not be well received today. The character of Drew was drawn a little too sympathetically for my liking considering he has torn his life apart for a 17 year old girl. And the girl just cannot get enough of a 40 something man. She wants things that most older adult women do not want. It's no realistic. The thing that really annoyed me is when the narrator finds himself becoming all too understanding and becomes attracted to his own babysitter. And off course these girls are every middle aged man's fantasy, beautiful, brainy, sophisticated, and sexually hungry for middle aged men. I really like Greg Isles' writing, but I found the characters in this book disturbing in the Me Too age. Please Mr. Isles, don't go down this road again. I just discovered you.

Poor Penn Cage. A friend saved his life when they were young and now he owes the guy. The friend calls in the debt when his teenage mistress ends up dead in the woods and upon discovering the body, high tails it rather than calling the police. The story is compelling and Iles does his usual superb job of evoking place. My problem is an utter lack of sympathy for the friend—a duplicitous, weak-willed, and self-pitying guy who takes full advantage of his friendship with Page. And I think less of Page when he begins to buy into the idea that those teenage girls are so hard to resist. And they just throw themselves at you! Fortunately Page also realizes that teenage girls are—and should be—off-limits to men in their thirties.

I'm only recently discovering Mr. Lies and still weighing my thoughts. His writing is outstanding although in "Turning Angel" I found myself wishing for less descriptive explanations of the moral decay that was associated with the crime an the circumstances surrounding it. Translation: too many descriptions of sex. Excellent plot but once the crime was introduced the ensuing repeat narration was better left out. He is a gifted writer without doubt. Therefore, he doesn't need shock value.

How could a Greg Iles book be anything but PERFECT? He writes beautifully and I could not put the book down. He always tackles some ethical issue without preaching. His books are more than just "pretty." Actually I've read all of his books, but after this last trilogy, I couldn't find anybody I wanted to read so I went back and ordered all of the old books I have read in the past. Surprisingly enough (maybe because I've read so many in between), it was like reading a new book. I've got several more to read. He is one of my top three authors. And I am a bookaholic and read so many books.

What a fantastic and detailed mystery. Mr. Iles is a great writer who entices his readers to keep turning the pages. However, if he's going to make his main character a lawyer, he really must be more realistic with how the way our legal system works in real life. That's why I give this fun read only three stars. It's as if he became lazy and hasty in an effort to move the plot forward. To me the plot suffered from this and took away from my reading experience. If this sort of thing happens in book 3, I will not move on to book 4.
