Renowned photographer George Lange’s work is guided by one simple truth: An unforgettable photograph is not about what the subject looks like, but what it feels like. In this entirely new kind of photography guide, written by Mr. Lange and Scott Mowbray, magazine editor and longtime amateur photographer, the rest of us will learn how to take photographs that don’t just document life but celebrate it.No fancy equipment required. Just hundreds of simple, inspiring ideas and lessons―each one illustrated with a photograph―organized around the six essential principles of seeing like a photographer. (Here’s one: Shoot the Moment, Not the Subject.)Here’s why to shoot in natural light―always. The fun of putting babies in surprising places. How to get intimate with food. Using a dramatic sky as your backdrop. The benefit of learning to know the light in every room of your house. Shooting hands or feet instead of faces. How to move past the “I was here†postcard effect. How to catch the in-between moments. Because in the end, it’s about living the moment, shooting the moment―and being in the moment forever.

This book is great. Lange demonstrates his experience and talent as a photographer with beautiful photographs. The point of the book is to give you tips "for taking the best pictures of your life" and it does just that. It doesn't really focus on the technical aspects about photography which makes it different from other photo books and is something I enjoyed. This book is about telling a story with your photographs and capturing those special moments that are constantly disappearing. Lange encourages readers to always keep shooting and look for the in-between moments that make a picture truly memorable. The design of the book is simple, clean, and beautiful and is easy to just flip through or read cover-to-cover. I recommend this book to any photographer looking to capture simple moments of life with a new perspective.
I purchased this book twice - once of myself and once as a gift for a young family member. I read this entire book and still refer back to it often as my skills improve. I particularly like the friendly, engaging tone of the author. He is less about "must have" gear and more about creating photographs with whatever gear you have. He taught me how to look for pictures in any situation and gave simple, practical information to improve the quality of each picture. He demystifies photography - he assumes you do not have an extensive background, yet he imparts knowledge while pulling your skills forward. Plenty of pictures show you exactly what he is teaching. This book reminds you to be creative and have fun.It is easy to understand on your own level. You can absorb the more technical information, or just focus on the simple, straightforward lessons.I was confident purchasing this book for a 13 year old beginner who uses the family's point and shoot camera. I knew she would enjoy the short lessons and fun attitude. And, he is not above taking pictures that are trendy and fun for a younger generation of photography enthusiasts!
In the beginning when you first picked a camera when you didn't know the rules. It was exciting, free and fun. That is what this book is about. When you know enough about your craft, you know when you can break the rules. He insist on natural light and sometimes strange angles. How he becomes one with his subject is worth a study in itself. Dig a bit deeper and consider carefully the simple words he has written.there You will find a wonderful philosophy. So if you have reached a stage in your journey with photography you find yourself at a point where burn out looms, buy this book. The photography is wonderful but his simple approach and love of people is the pot of gold in this book. I have often said that I fall in love two or three times a year, in his case it's every person he photographs.
In a quest to learn more about making good photos, I bought this book. It’s all about taking photos of people, and the author is all about spontaneity. It’s refreshing to hear his stories and read his tips; the author keeps pulling us back to having fun while taking photos, to bringing us back to the moment of snapping pictures. And that’s something I can remind myself to do.Sharing all the author’s amazing photos and reading his tips is worthwhile, too.
I love this book. I am a person who just wants nice pictures. I don't care about technique, but do want something better than a pile of silly selfies. My husband and I travel a lot and I wanted to learn how to enrich our picture taking opportunities so I bought this book. With the information, I was so interested in photography that we actually bought fancy cameras and took a photography class. I've ready the book several times and every time something new catches my attention. It's well written and very well executed. We've both learned a lot from the book and our pictures are definitely better for it.
Eh, not the best photography book I've come across. I'm a photography teacher for elementary through high school aged children and I'm always looking for ways to engage students. My students haven't really bonded with this book or its content.
As a fairly advanced amatuer people photographer, I love books that help generate ways to think outside the box .This book provides it. It's not long, or complex, it's fun. It spurs the imagination and encourages a playful approach to photographing people and life. I really loved George's ongoing excitement at shooting people and he has some great ideas on how to generate energy and fun in the people photography you would shoot. If you need a technical look at people photography, this is not it. if you are looking for inspiration and a way to think outside the box when shooting people, you will enjoy this one. It will probably provide some smiles along the way!
Very simple approach to people photography which has really improved my posed and spontaneous portraits, making for much more natural, emotion charged images.I believe this is especially good for photographers very confident with technical skills, but who need to loosen up a bit, to stop controlling so much and instead catch wonderful moments. The intro explains how the author trained with Annie Leibovitz, and he certainly proved to be a worthy apprentice!
